How to Start Windows in Safe Mode
Windows Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that starts your computer with a minimal set of drivers and services. It can be used to troubleshoot and fix problems that prevent your computer from starting normally. Safe Mode also allows you to uninstall drivers and software, scan for malware, and perform other diagnostic tasks. In this article, we’ll explain how to start Windows in Safe Mode.
1. Using the System Configuration Tool
The System Configuration tool (msconfig) is the easiest way to start Windows in Safe Mode. Here’s how:

- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type msconfig and press Enter.
- Click on the Boot tab.
- Under Boot options, select the Safe boot checkbox. Click OK.
- When prompted to restart your computer, click Restart to enter Safe Mode.
Once you’ve finished troubleshooting your computer in Safe Mode, you can return to normal startup by unchecking the Safe boot checkbox in the System Configuration tool.
2. Using the Advanced Startup Options
If you are unable to start Windows normally or access the System Configuration tool, you can still start Windows in Safe Mode using the Advanced Startup Options:

- Restart your computer. Press and hold the F8 key while your computer boots. This will bring up the Advanced Boot Options screen.
- Select Safe Mode from the list of options using the arrow keys. Press Enter.
- Wait for Windows to start in Safe Mode.
Note that the Advanced Startup Options method may not work on newer versions of Windows, such as Windows 8 and above. In these cases, you may need to use a Windows installation disc or recovery drive to access the Advanced Startup Options.
3. Using the Command Prompt
If you are unable to start Windows normally or access the System Configuration tool, you can also start Windows in Safe Mode using the Command Prompt:
- Restart your computer. Press and hold the F8 key while your computer boots. This will bring up the Advanced Boot Options screen.
- Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt from the list of options using the arrow keys. Press Enter.
- When prompted, log in to your administrator account.
- Type the command “bcdedit /set {default} safeboot minimal” (without the quotes) and press Enter.
- Type “exit” and press Enter to close the Command Prompt.
- Restart your computer. It will now start in Safe Mode.
This method requires you to log in to an administrator account and use the Command Prompt to set Safe Mode as the default startup option. Once you’ve finished troubleshooting in Safe Mode, you can use the Command Prompt to restore normal startup again by typing “bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot” (without the quotes) and pressing Enter.
Starting Windows in Safe Mode is a useful diagnostic tool that can help you troubleshoot and fix problems with your computer. Whether you use the System Configuration tool, the Advanced Startup Options, or the Command Prompt, starting in Safe Mode is easy and straightforward. If you’re having problems with your computer, give Safe Mode a try!
